This 8-week trip to South Africa during the months of August and September 2023, fulfilled this ex patriot with memories and adventures I have wanted to do for decades. Even though I was born and raised in South Africa, I had never been to Kruger National Park, Namaqualand, the Western Cape, or crisscrossed the country by road . Planned almost a year in advance, hiring/renting a motorhome, we checked of all of those boxes, literally crossing the country from east to west, racking up 10,321 kilometers or 6,451 miles in the process.

Gail and I began the adventure in Johannesburg, where we picked up the motorhome camper. First stop, Kruger National Park for two weeks, having reservations in Berg en Dal, Satara, Skukuza

Areas covered, spending approximately 2-weeks in each area:

  • Kruger National Park
  • Namaqualand
  • Northern, Western & Eastern Cape Province
  • Kwa Zulu Natal
A pair of African Fish Eagles

Due to the thousands of photographs, the video below will demonstrate the beauty of Southern Africa and is abundance of wildlife.

The Birds of South Africa documents the 172 species I photographed over an 8-week period.

For the first time since owning the Z9 an Z6ii, it occurred to me that I could take great video so breaking old habits of taking just stills, this video is a culmination of hand-held video clips I took with the Z9 with 800mm lens and Z6ii with 100-400mm lens.
